Life In Motion
We thought we’d post on Thursday this week so you have ample time to plan your weekend festivities. Here are a few ideas for how to make this weekend special in Long Island City (besides coming to an open house at The Industry, which we strongly suggest):
Free Concert @ LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (31-10 Thomson Ave. 718-482-5151)
Come at 7PM to listen to the sounds of acclaimed Latin and jazz pianist and composer Jon Urrutia and drummer/percussionist Mauro Satalino. To check out their music: http://www.myspace.com/jonum and http://www.myspace.com/oruamusic
Friday at 6:30PM is the opening reception for a new exhibit at Flux Factory, artists Yana Dimitrova and Angela Washko’s “Cheap Paradise of Familiar Tasks and Places.” The show will run on Saturday & Sunday (from noon – 5PM), and will present the viewer with new, stimulating ways of looking at and interacting with everyday objects, and of understanding our world and consumer culture. As Flux Factory’s website asserts, “Through installation, painting, drawing, and video, Yana Dimitrova and Angela Washko portray the mundane patterns and structures of everyday experience and consider models of living that exist outside of our “to-buy-is-to-gratify” mentality.” The concept is sophisticated (probably not suited for the youngins) and sure to make for a thought-provoking afternoon.
Kayak from Anable Basin to Hallets Cove with The LIC Community Boathouse from 11AM – 1PM. The trip is designed to be relatively easy, suitable for those with little paddling experience and is only one-way, ending at the beach of Socrates Sculpture Park. A volunteer activity at the Park is encouraged afterwards. See the website for info and a description of what to bring: http://www.licboathouse.org/index.php/calendar/
LIC Community Boathouse . 46-01 5th St
Saturday & Sunday
Museum of the Moving Image – Jim Henson’s Fantastic World
Bring your child to celebrate the magic of the muppets at this family workshop. Here’s LIC Partnership’s description:
“Find out how Foley artists create sound effects for movies and television shows. Participants will watch a clip of The Muppet Movie and learn how the sounds in the film were produced. Afterward, they will have the opportunity to create new sounds for the action on-screen using a variety of materials and props.” Sounds like it is sure to delight!
The workshop is at 3pm on both days. Cost: Museum Admission + $5
Museum of the Moving Image . 36-01 35 Avenue Astoria
Come to Socrates Sculpture Park for a variety of interactive performance art. Check out the flyer for this Sunday’s schedule:
And as always, don’t forget about MOMA PS1′s Warm-Up Series, and GrowNYC, LIC’s Saturday farmers market in Socrates Sculpture Park. Grab some delicious, natural summer produce before the season ends. And while you’re out-and-about exploring the neighborhood, come say hello to us at The Industry. We have open houses on Saturdays & Sundays from noon-3PM, and would love to here about your weekend! Rather come during the week? Our sales office is open Wed – Fri, 10AM-5PM.
TGIF! Here are a few events to keep in mind when looking for things to do in Long Island City this weekend (8/5 – 8/7):
Fri. 8/5- 8/13: The Two Gentleman of Verona
Come see this Shakespeare classic at The Secret Theatre, performed by acclaimed comedy troupe Face Off Unlimited.
Shows: Fri @8pm, Sat @3pm/8pm, Sun @ 5pm. $18

Sat.- Popolopen/Peekskill Festival and Fireworks Trip
Here’s a blurb from LIC Boathouse: “We will head 3-4 miles up river and explore Iona Island, go past Bear Mountain Pier, under Bear Mountain Bridge into Popolopen Gorge. Four bridges converge there so it’s great for photos. Plus, there’s a beautiful waterfall and natural 20′ deep pool beckoning to you at the end. This is the best swimming spot on the Hudson!”
Sounds like an amazing summer event! For more info: http://www.licboathouse.org/index.php/2011/07/22/popolopenpeekskill-festival-and-fireworks-trip-saturday-8611/
